Red, White, and Blue on Brown with Woodgrain

A simple design, for my first card after a break to draw my annual Advent calendar, posted here on my drawing blog.  The card's patterned paper strips contrast with a dark brown panel and a wood grain texture.

Christmas Card 2022

For my Christmas card this year, I chose a Nativity scene that I drew in 2009 with the Wise Men in the foreground and the Holy Family and Bethlehem in the distance.  It's computer-printed with a white border on Neenah solar white card stock.  For a clearer view, click here for my original post "The Three Kings Approaching Bethlehem" on my drawing blog.

Butterfly - Light Orange and Cream with Green

I like the mix of colors in the patterned paper, butterfly layers, and sentiment banner.  

Card details:

• Card stock is Paper Source papaya (medium orange) and Papertrey Ink (PTI) terra cotta tile (deep rusty red), prairie grass (green), and vintage cream. 
• Patterned paper is melon berry (light orange) "petite scale" from PTI green tea leaves 8x8" pad (retiring). 
• Dies are from PTI life is beautiful (retired - butterfly) and number the stars banner (retired).  The two layers of the butterfly are both the same size, but I offset them a bit when I adhered them.
  
• The sentiment "with deepest sympathy" is from PTI spring woods, stamped with PTI prairie grass ink.

Turquoise and Blue Stars

Lots of bold contrast and a simple graphic style.  I like the turquoise and dark blue layered stars and "hello" word with the orangey-brown and white striped background.

Pink Flowers with Burgundy

A pretty floral card, tone-on-tone pink and burgundy with light green accents.  In real life, the colors are a bit lighter and less grayed.

• Card stock is Papertrey Ink (PTI) lavender moon (light pink-purple - card base), sweet blush (pale pink - flowers), and spring moss (light green). 
• Patterned paper is a scarlet jewel (burgundy) print from PTI in bloom (retired) 8x8" paper pad.

Red, White, and Blue Label with Plaid

This design started with yesterday's leftover red and blue label shapes.  I added a white sentiment label, then layered onto a textured tan card base with a strip of red, white, and blue plaid.

Red, White, and Blue Frame with Stars

A die cut frame gave me multiple shapes to mix and match, and I added a row of white stars.

A handsome monochromatic card - black, white, and kraft, accented with a rusty red layer.  I like the black and white grid print combined with the grid embossed card base.

Shimmer Wreath on Cream

A rustic, flecked cream card base decorated with shimmery shapes - brocade paper wreath, die cut leaves and "happy" word, and leaf ribbon. Rich textures and colors for a Thanksgiving theme.  

Note: the gray border is background, not part of the card.

• Card stock is Papertrey Ink (PTI) copper shimmer, scarlet shimmer, sun (yellow) shimmer, and rustic cream. 
• Patterned paper is Paper Source "brocade taupe" (retired).  To change its color from taupe to a light copper, I used a round Ranger ink blending tool with PTI canyon clay (orangey brown) and lovely lady (pink) inks. 
• Leaf ribbon is from PTI.

For my star panel, I stamped the red lines and blue stars.  It looks crisp and clean on a light blue card base.

Aqua Dots with Black and White

Two black and white prints accent the dotted aqua.  In real life, my aqua, turquoise, and teal colors work well together.

The leaf print paper inspired the colors and sentiment stamping for this card.  I like the varied width of the green and brown layers.  The leaf stamp adds visual weight to the sentiment and helps relate it to the patterned paper.

Tree on Blue and Green

A very simple design, stamped on two colors of card stock.  I like it a lot.

Card details:

• Card stock is Papertrey Ink (PTI) spring moss (light green) and spring rain (blue).  I joined the two halves (taped on the back) before stamping. 
• Die is from PTI noted: simply stitched A2 vertical.
• The sentiment "just a note" is from PTI winter woods (retired), and the tree is from PTI through the trees (retired), stamped with PTI cocoa bean (brown) and new leaf (green) inks. 
• If needed where the stamping crosses between the blue and green card stocks, I touched up the tree trunk with Micron 05 brown gel pen.  I made a batch of these cards, and most didn't need touch up.

Strong color contrasts on a varied-size dotted print, accented with an inlaid diagonal row of solid color stars.

A bright sunshine themed card.  The butterfly's zigzag print works well with the gingham sentiment panel.  I like the slight offset of the butterfly's layers, showing a bit of teal at the sides.

For this cheerful card, I chose a bright goldfinch and a patterned paper strip of multicolored dots.  The light orange base gives it a touch of autumn for an October anniversary.

When I began my design for this card, I thought I'd cut the dotted green paper to fit behind the lavender butterfly.  But it looked great as a rectangle layer.  So I placed it and the polka dot rectangle on the diagonal, with a diagonal word.  I like the playful effect.

Simple and elegant.  The knotted twine was the finishing touch that it needed.

• Twine is PTI true black baker's twine.  I used a 1/8" hole punch to notch the top and botttom of the card.
  
• Dies are from PTI spring woods and Savvy Stamps tall branches with leaves.

Chevrons - Purple and Turquoise

Lots of energy from the chevron print and die cut along with the strong diagonal background lines.  The purple and turquoise colors work well together.

The leaf theme appears in the embossed background, the patterned paper, and the stamping.  In real life, the ink is a very good match for the patterned paper.

A few simple elements make a bold red, white, and blue card.  I like the diagonal sentiment strip with the diagonal pen.

Today's card colors were inspired by a beautiful sunset sky.  I like the crisp dotted print of the butterflies against the soft tone-on-tone background.

A monochromatic card with a variety of contrast and texture.  A friend saw the patterned paper as a tree trunk and the roughly striped background as the forest.  I like the curvy leaves and sentiment font against the straight lines and angles.

• Card stock is Papertrey Ink (PTI) lemon tart (light yellow) and stamper's select white. 
• Dies are from PTI notched flowers and turning a new leaf (retired). 
• The flowers are from PTI funky florals, stamped with PTI amethyst allure (purple), Hawaiian shores (turquoise), berry sorbet (pink), harvest gold (medium yellow), and orange zest inks. 
• The leaves are from PTI turning a new leaf (retired), stamped with PTI green parakeet ink.
  
• The sentiment "sending sunshine" is from PTI keep it simple: encouragement (retired), stamped with PTI orange zest ink.  After the first stamping, I moved my card stock slightly L-R in the MISTI and restamped it for a bolder font effect.

Yellow Stars with Blue Thanks

A one-layer card with stenciled stars in two shades of yellow.  A blue shimmer card stock "thanks" and a knotted double wrap of blue striped twine add some dimension and texture. 

 Note: the gray border is background, not part of the card. 

Card details:

• Card stock is Papertrey Ink (PTI) stamper's select white and sapphire shimmer. 
• Stencils are from PTI seeing stars stencil collection, sponged with PTI bright buttercup (yellow - larger stars) and summer sunrise (yellow-orange - smaller stars) inks, using the round Ranger ink blending tool to apply the ink.
• Twine is PTI enchanted evening baker's twine.  To wrap and hold the twine around the card front, I punched a tiny hole near the top fold and a notch at the bottom.
  
• Die is from My Favorite Things many thanks (retired).

Star Frame with Banner

Two cheerful cards with a bright center panel.  The original card (above) has a star frame and banner, and for a birthday version (below), I added a bird and some star accents to the banner. 

 Card details:

• Card stock is Papertrey Ink (PTI) pure poppy (red), blueberry sky (medium blue), and enchanted evening (dark blue - bottom card). 
• Patterned paper is from PTI blueberry sky and lemon tart (yellow) pattern packs (tone-on-tone prints - retired). 
• Dies are from PTI border bling: skinny star frames, PTI wonderful words: hello (retired - top card), PTI bold borders: wave (celebrate word - bottom card), My Favorite Things party banner (retired), WPlus9 folk art florals (retired - bird - bottom card), and PTI star gazer (tiny stars - bottom card).

Star Thanks on Polka Dots

A layered star and a layered "thanks" word, layered with a stitched brown strip onto polka dots.

• Patterned paper is from PTI canyon clay pattern pack (tone-on-tone prints - retired). 
• Dies are from My Favorite Things vertical stitched strips (retired) and PTI seeing stars (larger star - retired), stars & stripes (smaller star), and huge thanks.

Blue and Yellow Stars on Kraft

Muted colors, with energy from the angled stars and the brush-textured sentiment.  The elements all have a distressed style, including the kraft background.

 Card details:

• Card stock is Neenah desert storm (light kraft) and Papertrey Ink (PTI) stamper's select white. 
• Dies are from PTI seeing stars (retired) and noted: simply stitched A2 vertical.
• The sentiment "thank you" is from PTI keep it simple: thank you II (retired), stamped with PTI blueberry sky (medium blue) ink.
• The stars are from PTI military stars, stamped with PTI blueberry sky, enchanted evening (dark blue), and bright buttercup (yellow) inks.  The center accents are added with PTI land that I love (retired - left and middle stars) and Y15 Copic marker (right star). 
• The stripes are from PTI distressed stripes (retired), stamped with PTI Americana (rustic red) ink.

Bright colors accented with black and white dots and a curvy black sentiment.  Embossed texture adds emphasis to the narrow aqua border.

• Card stock is Neenah solar white and Papertrey Ink (PTI) aqua mist.
• Patterned paper is from PTI true black bitty big pattern pack.
• Embossing folder is Stampin' Up subtle (retired).
• Stencil set is My Favorite Things card sized confetti, sponged with PTI raspberry fizz (pink), orange zest, new leaf (green), and Hawaiian shores (turquoise) inks, using the round Ranger ink blending tool to apply the ink. 
• The sentiment "thinking of you" is from Stampabilities card phrases (retired), stamped with Versafine onyx black pigment ink.
