Color Block Card - Dark Colors

Inspired by Nichole Heady's color block card, but with dark colors instead of pastels. I like my color blocks on several different colors of card bases. See below for more examples. Scroll down to end of post for card details.

Like most of my cards, these were created for Operation Write Home, "supporting our nation's armed forces by sending blank handmade greeting cards to write home on, as well as cards of gratitude to encourage them." (080)

Card details:
  • Color blocks (left to right) are Paper Source (PS) fig (purple-brown), PaperTrey Ink (PTI) enchanted evening (blue), PTI ripe avocado (yellow-green), PS cobalt (very dark blue in real life), PS beet (red-violet), PTI pinefeather (green), and PTI scarlet jewel (wine red). The black mat behind the color blocks is PTI true black.
  • To make my color blocks, I adhered the 3/4" color strips to a black base instead of white. With my dark colors, I didn't want white showing at the edge of the color block strip. For more details on constructing the color block strips, see Nichole Heady's color block card.
  • I drew the black lines on my color blocks with a black 1.0 Copic multiliner.
  • Card bases are PS gravel (gray at top of post), PTI ocean tides (blue green), PTI fine linen (tan), and PS curry (gold). PTI lavender moon was also very nice, but I was aiming for more of a masculine or gender-neutral effect.
  • Sentiment and horizontal lines on card base are computer-printed with black ink. The font for the sentiment "- Thinking Of You -" is Papyrus, bold, small caps.

Green Card with Large Bow and Button

A monochromatic card. It has a lot of dimension, but it's very mailable, because the faux button is thin, and the large bow is soft enough to flatten in the envelope.

The bow is 1/2" crinkle ribbon from Ellen Hutson, colored with a few drops of G12 and G40 Copic ink refill in a plastic sandwich bag. The card base is Paper Source jadeite. The dark rectangles are Paper Source spruce (medium dark) and PaperTrey Ink pinefeather (darkest). I cut the edges with Fiskars deckle scissors.

My button is a 1" circle of jadeite (same as card base), made shiny with UTEE (ultra thick embossing enamel) embossing powder. The UTEE also deepened the color. Before embossing, I punched it with a double-ribbon-slot punch, and drew a 15/16" circle with Copic 0.5 olive multiliner, using my plastic circles template.

Six Brown Hearts in Rounded Squares

As the title says ... six brown hearts in rounded squares. I printed the hearts and squares onto cream card stock, using PowerPoint, then colored with my Copic markers.

My card stock is PaperTrey Ink vintage cream (top layer and card base) and dark chocolate (middle layer with gold line). The gold is Prismacolor Premier metallic paint pen (broad tip). The Copic marker colors are E04, E09, E15, E21, E23, E29, E33, and E37.

Purple Dots Medallion on Turquoise

A summery note card with stripes, dots, circles, and a square.

The card stock is Papertrey Ink Hawaiian shores (turquoise), Paper source grape (purple), and Neenah (white) with purple dots that I computer-printed. In real life, the purple dots match the purple card stock - not grayed like my scan.

The circle punches are EK Success 2-1/4" (purple) and 1-3/4" (turquoise). I used Fiskars pinking scissors on the purple band. The white lines are drawn with Uniball white gel impact pen, using a 2" circle template for the circular line.

Diamond Quilt Button Card

Diamond shapes in a quilt-like pattern. Faux buttons in circle and heart shapes. Pastels on a rich, deep background color.

The button shapes are punched with a 3/4" circle and 1" heart punch (EK Success). The thread is drawn with wine Copic 0.3 multiliner. The buttonholes are drawn with black 1.0 multiliner, shaded with C5 gray Copic marker. The diamonds are 1-1/4" squares.

My card stock is Papertrey Ink lemon tart (yellow), spring rain (blue), and scarlet jewel (wine card base), and Paper Source sage (green) and blossom (pink).

Blue Dots and Scallops Card

A note card with scallops, dots, and stripes in blue.

The light blue eyelet strip is a white Doodlebug paper frill, colored with Copic markers B41 and B000. The solid-colored card stock is Papertrey Ink spring rain (light blue card base) and Paper Source lake (deep blue). I did the top edging with Fiskars scallop scissors. I don't know the name of the patterned paper. The sentiment "Missing you" is computer-printed in blue ink with "Lucida Handwriting" font.
